Like A Horde Of Mongol Butterflies

What we love is a reflection of the kind of person we are. What we hate does the same. God hates things.

There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that are quick to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

Proverbs 6:16-19 (ESV)

What God hates tells us what kind of God he is. He is the kind of God who hates lying and those who spread dissension. Killing innocents is anathema; he sets his cross hairs on the schemers.

We often think about what we love as indicative of purpose and personal mission. Colleges are filled with students pursuing their passions, hoping through it to glimpse the elusive white stag of identity – what they were meant to do.

But what do we hate? What evokes in you the righteous indignation of the Lord? What is that thing that you want to crush under your boot? What injustice upsets your guts and makes it roil like a horde of Mongol butterflies? What particular brand of evil are you made to fight in this world?

God can give us direction in our lives through what we love, our passions. He can also give us direction by our righteous hatred of specific sin in the world – lies, abuse, abortion, poverty – that lodge in our spine like a splinter.
