Introduction
One of the achievements of the culture wars touted by progressives as a great victory is the sexual freedom of individuals from entrenched conservative ideologies. Leading this parade is the crowd of gay, trans and queer individuals that have multiplied faster than a Chinese kid in a math competition.
Teenagers, particularly young girls, harvested from local recruitment centers – public schools – are bumping the numbers in some impressive ways. In our school district, near one-third of all students identify as something other than their birth gender. So big and so fast is the horde growth that one wonders where they all have been for the past five hundred years?

AN Answer to the question
The answer that you will hear from the liberal is that they were always there suppressing forbidden desire, passing furtive glances from behind the haystacks, and forced into a life of hypocrisy in fear for their own lives. Only in this progressive era has it been safe to emerge, the patriarchy having toppled, and Holy Mother Feminist having opened her bosom for all her sexually repressed children to suckle at her A cups in the public square.
This answer appears at first to makes sense. Gender and sexuality, as we have all been told, is and has always been as fluid as a wet fart. One can morph, change, revert and express themselves in an infinite number of ways. And it is through our new freedom to explore the sexual swamplands that humans are finally free to find their true selves. Sexual mutability is an immutable characteristic, like race, and this is how it is packaged and sold in the same bundle with the civil rights movements. Because sexuality and gender is changeable, we need to have the freedom to be able to express it as it morphs in real time, and to keep a person from expressing their sexuality in any of these infinite forms is to suppress their personhood. Linking sexual expression to personhood was the business of the 60s and 70s, and found its way in SCOTUS opinions of landmark cases like Roe, Casey, and Lawrence. Without complete, unrestrained sexual freedom, there is no personal identity.
Since, sexual liberation has gained momentum. Whatever strange kink was far off on stage left came to systematically take the center spotlight and recite its verse, until it was replaced with the next ingénue. Feminism, homosexual marriage, transgenderism, queer, drag queen story hour, have all pranced across the stage in predictable sequence. Now polygamy is is getting ready to strut its stuff and pedophilia is giddy with anticipation.
Yesterday’s taboos are today’s tattoos. The interdicts and prohibitions of culture are inked on our arms as we transgressed them one by one, as a testament to our brave new worldliness born from the ashes of torching the old order.
So when your boy comes home identifying as omnisexual, holding hands with his allosexual theyfriend with demiromantic tendencies (yes, these are real things), this is a sexual diversification that has proliferated in a very short period of time. Neologisms like these are increasingly creative and were completely nonexistent even two decades ado. This sexual crossbreeding corresponds with the destruction of gender norms which were present in our laws and cultural taboos. As the gender norms have been destroyed, this sexual quirkiness has quirked quickly, and, as I say, this is a claimed victory of the progressive mindset.
However, the progressive answer to the sudden rise of sexual diversity is not so easy as all that and overlooks an important aspect of order conveniently forgotten. Certainly Man is capable of all sorts of depravity, but this depravity can be mitigated by imposition of laws, social order and structural definitions which can keep the families of sins from propagating into their genus, species and subspecies.
Hows about an illustration?
Mrs. Smith Takes Maternity Leave
Let us imagine a 3rd grade class of a colloquial Christian school with Mrs. Smith, the teacher, faithfully instructing her twenty boys and girls. She runs a tight ship, though not so tight that smiles, laughter and fun are disallowed. But she is experienced and knows that the purpose of school is to learn, and to do this rules must be imposed and enforced. She insists the students raise the hand to speak or use the bathroom. Leaving their seat without permission lands them a twenty minutes timeout in the corner. Intercepted notes will be unfolded and read to the enjoyment of all but the two red-faced perps slouching in their desks. None of her students would admit to loving the rigidity, but it does allow for the fruiting of knowledge unencumbered by the weeds of distraction, ballyhoo and tom foolery. And just to make the expectations real clear, she has hung the classroom rules on the wall written on pink poster board, bedazzled, and with a picture of The Terminator pasted next to the consequences.
Now let us imagine that Mrs. Smith is heavy with child and takes her planned 12 week maternity leave, and the school, having fumbled hiring a deep pool of substitutes, has to go with a less than spectacular candidate, Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones wants to retire but due to unforeseen economic circumstances, she needs to continue working well past the average life expectancy of a Galapagos tortoise. She is old, unenergetic, and has more wrinkles than an over soaked foot. Not only that, she is past the point of caring and sees as her job to plug a hole with a warm body, which she at least can do.
After she takes over, things hum along nicely for a time; the classroom rules instituted and enforced by Mrs. Smith kept the students in line by habit and practice, but it wasn’t too long before a kid or two spoke out of turn. These infractions went uncorrected by a Mrs. Jones, who, sedated by a lunchtime ham sandwich, was nodding off at her desk and beginning to snore. More joined in. Soon kids are getting up willy nilly, using the bathroom, visiting with friends, and eating at their desks. Paper airplanes made cross classroom flights without FAA regulation. Day after day the infractions went unpunished and so the behavior of the class continued to devolve into something resembling The Lord of the Flies, which was at least some consolation because they were supposed to be reading it.
After several weeks, the classroom devolved into elementary anarchy. Kids started making out behind the coat rack, pages were torn from books, and some punk with his shirt untucked started a fire in the waste bin. Into the pyre went Mrs Smith’s pink poster board, Terminator picture and all.
If we apply the same explanation used by progressive regarding our current sexual indulgence to Mrs. Smith’s class, we would say that the truest expression of the student’s desire is the terminal behavior of the class – the rubbish fires and coat-closet fornications. These impish longings were always lurking in the back of their young minds at all times between the school bells, and all of the rules imposed were limiting the true expression of the children’s true selves. Mrs Smith’s rule setting was suppressing the diversity of life and the rule breaking was liberation. The opportunity provided by removing structure allowed for all the possibilities of the student’s potential.
It is these possibilities that arise when boundaries are leveled that take preeminence in the progressive mind, and is precisely what the imposition of law and structure is meant to prevent.
Pop Culture
I recently finished Philip Reiff’s book My Life Among The Deathworks and plan on writing a few thoughts on the sixteen percent of it I actually understood. Though it was a slog, some very insightful and paradigm shifting ideas came out of it; namely, his identification of the cultural trends of history.
Briefly, he divides the history of humanity into three different cultural epochs. First world cultures were the pagan, fate based tribal groups bounded by taboos. Second world cultures are dominated by the great religions like Judaism and Christianity and are based on faith with a transcendent authority prescribing activity with commands and interdictions. Lastly, the third world cultures, what we are on the verge of falling into, is based on fiction- the only thing left to milk for meaning in the absence of truth. Third culture is defined by its transgression of the second world commands. It is not creative, but destructive, or to put it in Reiff’s words, it is only creative in its destruction. Its mission is to transgress any and all social boundaries of the second world. It is anticulture.
When boundaries are destroyed, what is left is the infinite potential for change; the fences are cut and the cows are free to roam. Cleverly, Reiff calls uses the acronym “pop” to stand for the primacy of possibility. So “pop culture” for Reiff, is the culture of the third world that transgresses and dissolves the boundaries of second culture through deathworks -intentional acts of negation of cultural boundaries (abortion, gay marriage, trans stuff, modern art)- opening the possibilities of becoming absolutely anything. Destroy faith and rewrite an autobiographical fiction.
Understand, however, that this “possibility” is not the hopeful and exciting opportunities for achievement, like a boy exploring the possibilities of future careers. More like the possibilities of infinite cancers that may come from a gene when regulatory processes are eliminated. The possibilities that happen when man is freed from all inhibitions and authority.
One hundred years ago, the only possibility afforded to us through second world culture was masculine and feminine screwed in tightly to a male and female bodies; very few other possibilities were even considered, others were not even dreamt of. Eliminating these cultural structures allowed for the possibility of possibilities, an exploration of how badly we can defile ourselves. These possibilities manifest themselves in a speciation of evil, or to use the Apostle Paul’s phrase, “they invent ways of doing evil” (Romans 1:30). Each new indulgence of possibility gives way to deeper and darker possibilities to be attempted. First the speaking out of turn, soon the trash can fires.
Thought Mutts
There is a point, however, where the flood of possibilities can be dammed by cultural mores so that the heinousness of these down stream possibilities are not even considered. Consider the dog.
All the splendid variety of dog breeds are the same species, Canis familiaris, and come from some kind of wolfish ancestor. From the teacup chihuahua to the mastiff, all of these peculiar species and have come about by allowing the genetic variance present in the wolf to flourish into the diversity we find with us today. Even though we tend to keep these breeds in clearly demarcated categories with specific breed standards, had we let the dogs hump whenever they wanted, we would have just a pile of mixed genetic information, or mutts.
If the wolves were prevented from breeding, however, none of these breeds would have existed. Would the chihuahua be missed? Would anyone be sniffling for a tiny, smash faced pug? No, because without letting the wolves procreate, all the variety of breeds and mutts would not have been realized. The potential for all the mutts in the wolf’s DNA would not have been a possibility.
Wolves exist in every human heart, and with them the possibility of species and mutts of sinful desires. God’s prohibitions keep the wolves from causing damage in their own right, but also inhibits their breeding. Mutts, like sins, can endlessly differentiate into smaller and smaller subcategories. Just as in the wolf was the genetic potential for the Chinese hairless, so in sexuality immorality lies the capacity for the kind of sinful ingenuity, or singenuity, leading to the myriad sexual depravities floating in the air today. A porn addiction never stays with the banal boudoir photos, but rots predictably to filthier and more violent offense.
Singenuity, however, can be mitigated by God’s law; increasing depravity is gelded through interdiction and enforcement of boundaries. The possibilities of our sinful mutts are not missed, indeed do not come to mind. In the old order, homosexuality was a desire with a strong commandment suppressing its expression. No commandment existed, nor was one needed, against puppy play.
So to say that all the sexual bouquet we see today were all ready made and waiting underneath an inch of cultural soil is discounting the role that society plays in the mitigation of sin. The potential for evil is much greater than its current presentation in any given society. Through law and order the full chaotic potential of the human heart is checked. And so a more true response to the proliferation of sexualities we see is both yes and no. Yes, humans are capable of all kinds of increasing and divergent wickednesses. And also No, these sinful species and mutts we see today would not have even come to mind had there not been the destruction of the social order instituted by God through sacred revelation – had the wolves not been allowed to breed.
Conclusion
The speciation of sexual immorality has grown exponentially in the past fifteen years. New genders are mined daily from the infinite possibilities of fiction we invent. With the intentional destruction of God’s second world culture and his prohibitions, there is no boundary, and what remains is the primacy of possibility.
The obvious point of the law is to mitigate the sinful desires of man. But what we find out when the law is removed is that it kept these large categorical wolfish sins from breeding and inventing new and more perverse avenues of defilement -the increasingly kinky sex stuff that happens when sin is left to breed unchecked into genus, species and subspecies.
Our current sexual depravity and all its myriad forms is not the crescendoing human freedom liberated from oppressive religion. It is the the unchecked mutation of gender into all the possibilities of cancerous sexuality as the order of God has been allowed to dissolve, and thoughts that may have lay unthunked and untried have been allowed to breed.
As we move forward in the battle for culture, it is imperative that we not only look at God’s word to see the kinds of rot His law keeps at bay, we also need to be aware that obeying His law and honoring the gender boundaries He set up makes for optimal human flourishing and joy, while also suppressing the peculiar perversions that would otherwise not materialize unless man is left to his own singenuity.
