America is not a nation founded by immigrants; it is a nation founded by settlers. The latter relocate to begin a society where there is not one, the former leaves an established society to join a pre-existing one. Pilgrims and Puritans, for example, established a society into which the Irish, for example, immigrated to. The difference is between one who builds a house and one who moves into it; one who invents a sport and one who participates; one who starts a band and the bass player that joins it to play in accord with the established genre.
