Running Thoughts #28

“For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” 1 John 2:16

All that constitutes the carnal world now is the same that Satan offered to Eve:

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (lust of the flesh), and that it was a delight to the eyes (lust of the eyes), and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise (pride of life), she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” Genesis 3:6

Satan still tempts in this way. Sin has the strange power to imbue objects with desire that are otherwise banal and commonplace. Were there no other desirable trees in the garden? Had she not already tasted the sweetness of other fruits? But it was the allure of the unknown and the promise of withheld wonderment that caused the eye to sparkle, the mouth to salivate, and the arm to reach.
